November 7 - 10, 2016

This week ended with the Remembrance Day Assembly in the gym.

The Division I Choir sang, "Why Do We Have Remembrance Day?"

The Division II Handbells Club played "Purcell's Canon" with students from rooms 7, 8, 12 and 14 who played the following ORFF instruments:  xylophones, metallophones and glockenspiels.

Rooms 7, 8, 12 and 14 sang, "May You Dwell in Peace".

This week, in the staff room they continued to play ORFF instruments.  We did touch a bit on each of their inquiry questions.  With grades 1 and 2 classes, we discussed a balanced sound.  With grades 3 and 4 classes, we discussed how each of the ORFF instruments were connected.  This helped the students to focus on listening to each other besides just playing each of their own parts.  With grade 5 and 6 classes, we did discuss what success was as we were playing the instruments.

Friday 4 November 2016

For the past 2 weeks the students from grades 1 - 6 have been coming to music class in the staff room.  The xylophones, metallophones and glockenspiels have been in there and will be there for one more week.

The grade one and two students have mainly been working on proper technique of playing.  They have also played some rhythm patterns on them.

The grade 3 and 4 students from rooms 7, 8, 12 and 14 have been learning parts on these ORFF instruments.  They will be performing "Purcell's Canon" at the Remembrance Day Assembly on Thursday, November 10 at 10:30 a.m. in our school gym.

Our other grade 3 and 4 students have been learning about the Instruments of the Orchestra in preparation for their field trip to the Calgary Philharmonic Concert entitled "Peter and the Wolf" on November 17, 2016.  They have also been reviewing technique, rhythm patterns and and songs on them.

The grade 5 and 6 students have been reviewing playing technique, rhythm patterns and songs.

Friday 7 October 2016

The grade 5 and 5 classes wrote in their duotangs answers to the following questions:

  1. One thing I do well in music
  2. One thing I would like to learn in music
  3. One thing I wonder about in music
  4. My favorite singer is .... He/she performs ......
Reading their answers was very informative.

Friday 16 September 2016

During the week of September 12 - 16, we have been:

Kindergarten:  In the one class we have had with each of the kindergarten classes, we started learning each of the students' names as we sang the song, "Name, Name".   We also sang songs that exposed the students to musical terms such as fast - slow; high - low.  We sang action songs, the "Alphabet Song" and "This Old Man" (A song about numbers)  We played 2 circle games:  "Ring Around the Rosy" and "The Farmer in the Dell."

Grades 1, 2:  We have been getting to know the students' names and setting expectations for music in grades one and two.  We are reviewing some of the concepts and songs from kindergarten.  Some of the songs are new to kindergarten.  Most of the songs are review to the grade twos.

Grades 3 - 6:  We are developing a rubric for singing.  the students have contributed ideas on what helps us sing better.  We have spent time figuring out exactly how we can help someone learn to sing a song.  After we establish our rubric, for singing in tune, students who are making connections and singing in tune consistently as we learn new songs, can then help other students learn to sing in tune.

Friday 9 September 2016

Sept. 6 - 9, 2016

This year, music classes will be in each of the individual classes.

Students will be helping to move instruments and equipment from room to room.

This will be an exciting adventure.  It will require that we work together as a team.

In new ways, we will understand the meaning of the 3 pillars of respect:
  1. Respect yourself
  2. Respect others
  3. Respect your place.
As we transition, we sing our school song, "We Help Each Other Grow".  (See the lyrics below.)

We Help Each Other Grow
(Colonel J. Fred Scott School Song)

Chorus:
Each day’s a celebration
We’re always on the go
We learn a lot at Colonel Scott
We help each other grow
We help each other grow

Verse 1:
The teachers help the students
In warm and friendly ways
The students show good sportsmanship
When working or at play

Chorus:
Each day’s a celebration
We’re always on the go
We learn a lot at Colonel Scott
We help each other grow
We help each other grow

Verse 2:
The halls display our artwork
The rooms are filled with song
The playground and the gym ring out
With laughter loud and strong

Chorus:
Each day’s a celebration
We’re always on the go
We learn a lot at Colonel Scott
We help each other grow
We help each other grow

Verse 3:
 We show co-operation
And responsibility
Which gives our school an extra-special
Personality.

Chorus:
Each day’s a celebration
We’re always on the go
We learn a lot at Colonel Scott
We help each other grow
We help each other grow
